After a five-hour drive across the blazing Namibian desert, it was a pleasure to be introduced to Niekie and Gerda… and also to one of their ice-cold lagers and some of the best biltong I have ever eaten. That afternoon, I was given the keys to my own 4x4 and invited to speed around the farm and search for game! Jumping into a 1970’s Range Rover, I drove through the farm gates and off-roaded towards the Karas Mountains.....

.... My search did not take long. Five minutes of skidding and bumping and a herd of young male springbok bounded out in front of me, shortly followed by a large herd of oryx, who raced alongside my jeep as if to test out their speed. I also saw kori bustards, klipspringer and steenbok before returning to the lodge, intact and hungry. You don’t have to self-drive and guided drives are available in the morning or even at night. After a cooling dip in the pool, I put Niekie's enthusiasm for his Namibian mutton to the test. After my fourth helping of the rich, spicy hunks of meat, washed down with glugs of Kalahari wine, I was most definitely convinced. I was lucky enough to stay here for two nights. I recommend you do the same.
