Peter and Hillary, an English couple, came to stay at Kunene River Lodge on a visit to their daughter who was then working in Namibia as a volunteer......

..... and fell in love with the place. In an admirable and dramatic display of free will, six months later they had sold up in the UK and become the owners. They have since infused the place with new energy. At Kunene River Lodge, there is no unnecessary luxury but you feel the serene atmosphere, the magic presence of the Kunene, bordered with magnificent jackalberries, wild jasmine, ficus, mopanes and bamboo. The area is well known to ornithologists because of the endemic species found here, one of which being the Cinderella waxbill. Peter is passionate about birds and has already counted over 230 species. He will take you to watch them by boat, preferably very early in the morning or late in the afternoon at sundowner time. The Deluxe rooms have been built in a garden of flowers. You will have every opportunity to enjoy the view as well, on the footpaths along the river or on the huge wooden terrace, built on piles, where meals are served. Activities not to miss are bird-watching, rafting on the rapids in the Onduruso Gorge, canoeing, Cinderella birding trips, fishing or a visit to a Himba family.
