I arrived at Mushara with the first rains, an unforgettable moment in Namibia as a heavy perfume of dry grasses and scorched earth fills the air. Mariza and Marc built the lodge 12 years ago, naming the lodge after the purple pod terminalia trees, ‘mushara’ in the local Ovambo language.....

.... The immense interior room with its high ceiling, incorporating the reception, bar and lounge, reminds me of a scene from Alice in Wonderland with the play of mirrors reflecting the garden and the ostrich egg chandeliers like stars. The wooden screens allow for cosy seating arrangements; leather sofas, kilim carpets, cashmere throws, paintings and drawings collected by Marc’s parents and black-and-white photographs of elephants all combine to give the area a refined atmosphere. Under Mariza’s supervision, dinner is an elegant affair of candles and white cloths - a pleasure for the eye as well as for the taste buds. The air-conditioned chalets are large and very comfortable, decorated with the same mix of modern and traditional Africa. I couldn’t imagine how the two newer 'Villa Musharas' could really surpass these already superb chalets, but an involuntary “Ah!” of admiration sprang to my lips as I walked in! A piece of advice: don’t plan to do much else than bathe in all the luxury. My desire to hit the hiking trail was quickly subdued by the fact that a lion had been seen there some days before. The luxury of Mushara can make you forget that you are at the entrance of the Etosha Park!
