The cactuses and orange trees may have grown up now, but one thing remains unchanged. Barchan Dunes is one of my absolute favourite places to stay in Namibia! Hannetjie, with her natural charm, and Willem, with his sense of humour, are truly great hosts.....

.... Their friendly welcome is reinforced by the enthusiasm of their dogs who rush to meet your car; and the dogs are followed in their turn by two very cute pet meerkats, who have made their home just in front of the house! The generously-sized cottages, each decorated in a different theme, are built into the crescent-shaped hollow of the dunes that overlook a serene landscape of mountains and rocky outcrops in the distance. In the evening, dinner is served communally in the elegant dining room. This is a highlight, as much for the quality and quantity of Hannetjie’s culinary skills (make sure you prepare for this by dieting beforehand!) as for the good conversation. Willem generously serves some excellent wines - you find your glass refilled as if by magic. The retreat merits a stay of at least two nights to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding area and simply to pamper yourself. Don’t miss walking in the canyon among the ghostly silver trunks of the moringa trees. Willem can organise excursions into the dunes of Sossusvlei, one hour away (book in advance). Late in the afternoon, Willem takes you on a game drive to see the 40 oryx on his farm or to contemplate the sunset, drink in hand, from a viewpoint on the rose-coloured dunes. “Another boring day ends in Africa!” he concludes with a laugh.
