Set against the Aus Mountains almost a mile above sea level, Klein Aus Vista overlooks the endless plains of the Southern Namib Desert. This is a proper family-run business managed by the friendly Swiegers brothers and sister, Piet, Willem and Francis.....

.... Near the reception and restaurant, the Desert Horse Inn offers tastefully-decorated rooms that are scattered on a small hillside each with a verandah facing the sunset. For those who seek solitude, the Eagles Nest chalets at the foot of an impressive chaos of granite boulders and just 7km from the lodge will be the right option. The rocks have been integrated into the buildings, hugging the chalets or emerging in the interiors in the most unexpected places. Each self-catering chalet is different: ‘The Rock’, my favourite, is perched on the side of a hill between two enormous boulders. The interiors are spacious, rustic and imaginative, each with a fireplace for cold winter nights and ceiling fans for the summer season. In the kitchen, the table is already set and the fridge is full of cold drinks. In the evening, the fiery rays of the setting sun touch the rocks and the chalets in dramatic fashion. The landscape around the Aus Mountains, not far from the red dunes of the Namib Desert, is spectacular and a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers, with numerous trails on the 51,000 hectares of the private Sperrgebiet Rand Park. The flora is exceptionally rich after winter rains and boasts a stunning variety of succulent plants that paint the landscape in purples and yellows at times. You'd need a couple of days to fully explore Klein Aus Vista's own park and neighbouring Namib Naukluft Park. Most of the excursions offer the opportunity to visit the wild horses of Garub, 20km away in the Namib Naukluft Park.
